Character

To what extent were you able to relate to the novel's central characters?

  • I can relate to Caroline. She knows Joseph is scared of Tom at the beginning, but she wants Joseph to get to know him and see that he is actually ok. Joseph thinks that he is crazy because of the information he has been fed by others in the community.

I can relate to her, because some of my friends from BGS don’t know any of my friends from different schools. They might have heard something about them and there-fore have a prejudice view against the person.

  • I can relate to Joseph a bit I think. I met someone who people had told me bad things about and said not to be friends with him. However once I got to know him he was a good bloke and we became good friends.

This is like when Joseph was going to meet Tom Leyton for the first time. Mrs Mossop told Joseph not to talk to Tom and told him some bad stories about him. Joseph didn't listen to her and enjoyed his time with Tom Leyton.

  • Strongly agreeing with Dom I think I relate to Josephs character because in my past I have judged people before meeting them and judged them on account of other people’s views of them. However sometimes later finding out that those people where nothing like I had perceived.

  • I don't think it would be fair for me to say I could relate entirely to one character in the novel. There seemed to be certain character traits that I could relate to in each character but not just one character alone.

At the beginning of the novel when Tom Leyton kept nearly completely to himself, to an extent I can relate to this, sometimes you like to be by yourself for a while. But to live your life hidden away would be unbearable to many people including myself; so what I am getting at is too long by yourself, locked up is not good at all.

Mrs Mossop likes to talk often to Joseph's mum which I can relate to because people never like to be left in the dark, they like being informed. When this turns to gossiping behind peoples back as Mrs Mossop did it turns a bit ugly.

Same as 'dom' and 'ollie' I can relate to Joseph in the scence that I have judged people before I have met them.
